I am writing this blog as I'm getting a lot of questions how i have got my hair blonde from black. In short, with great difficulty, but it is possible with patience, time and knowledge.
Most hair dressers won't attempt this due to liability of the hair breaking and falling out. So the only way is to do it yourself. Back your self up with knowledge, watch lots of tutorials on YouTube and research the products. Disclaimer I am no hairdresser so don't take my word as gospel.
I'm from the UK so products may vary.
You will need:
A non metallic bowl
Plastic hair clips
30% developer (Sally's)
13 volume developer (Sally's) x2 or 3
10 volume - non bleaching developer (Sally's)
Blue powder bleach
White/grey Toner - I reccomend Wella Color Charm in white lady ( order from Internet)
Protein enriched deep conditioning
Purple Blonde shampoo and conditioner
So, if your hair is dark brown or black then, the process isn't instant. You will need to bleach your hair 3-4 times. Leaving your hair to heal, enriching it with deep conditioning in between, for about 1-2weeks before the 2nd bleach. If the bleaching is repeated any less than that then the hair WILL fall out. Putting up with various stages of orange for a few weeks is inevitable :-p but worth the wait to be blonde :-)
So you need to mix the stronger developer 30% for first application , mix with the blue powder bleach in the bowl. (Sally's sell one off sachets -which is enough for the ends, so no measuring is required). Section your hair into about 5-6 sections using hair bands. Measure how long you want the blonde ends to be and place a plastic hair clip where you want the blonde to end ( the bigger the better). This is so the bleach doesn't rise any higher and helps for future bleachings ( you won't end up with an orange band each time you bleach your hair).place a strip of tin foil under the hair tip and paste on the bleach with the brush making sure you get both sides. Put plenty on ! Wrap up and complete all the sectioned hair tips. Leave as long as possible 1 - 1 and half hours. Check your hair is doing ok every 20 minutes. If its feeling like spongy cotton wool, wash it off... You may need a lighter bleach (which will take longer). Once the bleaching is done. Deep condition it and leave your hair well alone for about a week. The 2nd bleach use the 12 volume developer and repeat the first application process. Leave a week and repeat the process over the few weeks until you reach a banana yellow colour. Do not bleach more than 4 times it is not recommended. When you have reached the yellow stage it's time to tone !
Mix the toner with the 10 volume non bleaching developer and apply to the hair the same way you did when bleaching.
Toners are not permanent, so you will need to keep on top of the yellowy tones with using purple blond shampoos. I'd reccomend toning every 8 weeks or so.
I'm putting some more blonde streaks in underneath will post when I've done it :-)
